Established in 1982, The Eleventh Muse has published such notable poets as United States Poet Laureate Ted Kooser, Colorado Poet Laureate Mary Crow, Mark Irwin, A. E. Stallings, Jake Adam York, David Keplinger, and Lucille Lang Day. The journal, with a color cover and perfect binding, is published annually in late winter/early spring by Poetry West.
Why the title? In Greek mythology, there were nine Muses. The Greek poet Sappho was called "The Tenth Muse" to indicate her stature above other mortals. This journal was originally the product of a writing group for women, who chose the name to indicate their connection to the feminine poetry lineage. Though Poetry West and the journal expanded to include men, the name stuck.
Current contest: 1st Place $100, 2nd $50, 3rd $25.

We are interested in everything from traditional metrical/narrative work through free verse lyrics and into cutting-edge work that pushes on the boundaries between poetry and prose. Whatever the style, the language must be extraordinary. We also consider essays, criticism, reviews, and short prose works on poetry and interviews. Please query first. We accept translations if you can provide us with the original untranslated text as well.
General Submissions: We are no longer accepting general submissions.
• The deadline is June 1, 2008.
• Simultaneous submissions are fine, but please notify us ASAP if your work is accepted elsewhere.
• Under no circumstances should you send us revisions to a poem that we are still considering. If we accept a poem that you have revised in the meantime, please feel free to let us know when we accept the poem--however, we cannot guarantee we will accept the revisions.
• If your poem was published in an e-zine, it's previously published. However, if you posted it at an online workshop for critique and revision, the poem is still eligible for submission.
• Feel free to query us by e-mail on the status of your manuscript if you do not hear from us within three months of submission. Send questions to fgomeztagle@gmail.com
• Contributors receive one free copy of the issue their poem appears in, as well as a discount for additional copies of that issue.
